Why we are starting People Tech Maritime

Brought to you by the team behind Digital Ship

There is an enormous gap between the technology which could provide most benefit to individuals working in today's shipping industry in working towards their goals - and the technologies they normally currently have.

To bridge the gap, we are launching a new venture, People Tech Maritime, to organise events and workshops, webinars, and provide publications.

SHIP SHORE COMMUNICATIONS: crew and staff want it available, fast and cheap. IT departments want systems which make it easy to manage and secure.

DECARBONISATION - crew, technical staff, performance managers and commercial managers want systems which enable them to understand exactly where they are and be able to make decisions easily. That involves everything from improving current voyages and ship technical operation, to investing in new fuel technologies and making a case to charterers and other stakeholders.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES - are not yet achieving their potential to improve maintenance / asset management, procurement, port call management, competency management / training, commercial management and everything else. Part of the problem is that they often focus on administration, rather than providing the situation awareness needed by people in different roles. Administration may be a simpler IT challenge, but most maritime staff are decision makers not administrators. And administering IT products themselves is extremely difficult.

There are also gaps between technologies which would be most useful to maritime employees, and what is currently available to them, in cybersecurity management, vessel navigation.

These are of course not easy problems to solve - if they were, it would be solved by now.  But we can make a unique contribution by hosting discussions for knowledge sharing in specific areas of this, as we did at our Digital Ship Oslo event at Nor-Shipping and our webinars over the spring, supported by reporting in our magazine, also named People Tech Maritime.

Through in-depth discussions about specific topics of people and technology in maritime, standards and better ways of doing things can emerge. The components of the solution can also become standardised. Just as standard ways of doing things have evolved in all other areas of our lives.  There can be enormous business opportunities for technology companies in providing standard components. If you like the idea please sign up to our newsletter, keep an eye on our upcoming events, webinars and magazines over the coming months. Karl Jeffery and Matt Stevens People Tech Maritime
