A new milestone in ammonia-powered shipping design has been reached with the release of a detailed concept design for a 3,500 TEU ammonia-fueled container feeder vessel.
Featuring integrated safety systems and having secured approvals from both ABS and Lloyd’s Register, this project highlights a significant collaborative effort among leading industry partners—including the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, A.P. Møller – Mærsk, Deltamarin, Everllence, Eltronic FuelTech, Lloyd's Register, Lloyd's Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, and the American Bureau of Shipping—to advance ammonia as a practical and safe alternative fuel.
The work focused not only on safety barriers to protect the crew—such as physical separation of ammonia spaces, safe venting distances, drainage systems, water screens, and ammonia release management systems (ARMS)—but also on key technical design factors critical for ammonia-fueled vessels, including optimal tank capacity and the location of essential equipment.
