Karl Jeffery, editor of People Tech Maritime, and Dimitris Lyras, director of Paralos Maritime / Ulysses Systems, have published a new short book on how to develop the middle layer of organisations with the help of language models.

The book is available on Amazon Kindle / print here for £2.22 https://lnkd.in/dYTbdCQ4

And free pdf download here.

The "digital middle layer" here means the knowledge structures and systems of the company which supports commonly repeated decision making.

The part which goes between the bottom digital layer, of data in the database, and the top digital layer of one-off decision making.

The strength of the Romans was entirely down to their organisational strength or 'middle layer'.

Many people are very good at building and working with organisational middle layers, with our natural abstraction skills. Language models do abstraction in a very different way to people, which is not so good for middle layers. The key to getting value from language models is knowing what sort of abstraction you need to be doing.

And a robust middle layer can also drive agentic tools based on language models, but working with language models in a very different way!

So a lot of complex ideas here, but we try to thread them together in a way which helps you work out how to build a robust organisation, taking benefit from language models where they help, and having an organisational knowledge structure that can serve agentic tools as well as people. This should lead to more robust organisations which can do much more with less.
