The shipping industry is in the midst of a huge transition. The goal is climate neutral shipping in 2050.
For any ship owner or shipping company there are many decisions to make about how to go about the decarbonization process in a way that makes sense on several different parameters.
A new tool developed by ReFlow in a process facilitated by Danish Shipping and in cooperation with a number of Danish shipping companies will make these decisions a little easier.
“Data driven green transition” is the goal of the Lifecycle Emissions Assessment Tool in the words of Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen, CEO of ReFlow. The idea has been to develop a standard model for assessing the full lifecycle emissions of a vessel. This will allow ship owners and others to explore different scenarios concerning different fuel types, technology upgrades, the impact of energy-efficiency initiatives and more.
“I believe the tool holds huge potential for having a simple way of estimating the upstream emissions from vessel production. We will be looking into it more when we look at new fuels especially. because the production side becomes more important,” said Cecilie Damgaard Jensen, Decarbonization Analyst at DFDS.
The process started in 2023 with support from the Danish Maritime Fund.
“For Danish Shipping it has been important to develop a tool that looks at the whole lifecycle of a vessel. It has also been important to us that the result is a tool that is operational and useful and effective in making the decarbonization process more manageable for our members,” said Nina Porst, Executive Director of Climate, Environment and Security
